WIN IT! East West 101 & WIN the series on DVD

Congratulations to my work pal Aisha Kamara and her debut role on SBS channel TV Series "East West 101". Aisha is a natural actress and has no prior training whatsoever and to see her score such a emotionally dramatic role on this mainstream show was a breath of fresh air. Aisha dropped into my workplace last week and was retelling her experiences on the set. The line of being at the right place at the right time is important here, as Aisha scored this gig after networking at an ICE film event last year. She met the producer and the rest is history.

The explosive new series of multicultural drama EAST WEST 101 started on Wednesday 20 April at 8.30pm on SBS ONE. It explores the ramifications of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan through crimes committed in Australia. What happened during the war in the opium fields of the Chora Valley in Afghanistan and the collateral damage to civilians in Takrit in Northern Iraq, comes home to the main streets of Lakemba and the malls of Cabramatta. This truly is ummissable television, starring Don Hany and Susie Porter.

Good friend of ICE, Aisha Kamara, TropWest winner, Create Media! participant, actress, writer and director makes her television debut on East West 101 on SBS Wednesday April 27th at 8.30pm.

A Somali teenage boy is found viciously bashed to death in a lonely railway tunnel. When the investigation leads Malik and Sonny to a group of white youths, the detectives must determine if this murder was a result of racial conflict. Meanwhile, Internal Affairs investigates the shooting of Mahmoud, who is now known to be an accessory in the armed robbery, and the tension between Malik and Travis continues to rise.

WATCH: Laurent Boiteux on Hungry Jack’s TVC

Congratulations to budding actor/ filmmaker Laurent Boiteux and his first commercial gig on the Australia nation-wide airing of Hungry Jack’s commercial. Laurent is Brisbane born and has since risked it all, and migrated to Sydney for the past year. His transition into being a working actor has been an easy one, but after further developing his skills, collaborating on many projects, gathering enough material for his showreel, he has finally hit a nice and juicy gig – his first TVC.

On the topic of acting, here are some tips:

1. Skill yourself up: Acting is a craft and you need to sharpen your skills in preparation of any potential role. A pretty face can only get you so far and great acting will be the determining factor in leaving a good and professional impression.

2. Know where the jobs are at: If you want to work in film and TV, it is good to know where to find work. NY and LA are the place where most casting directors are based. But if you can’t relocate, that’s still fine, just be prepared to go back and forth if something potential pops up.

3. Sacrifice: Understand that there are just some things that have to be missed out for the sake of the craft. That could mean letting go of a relationship, missing out on certain friendships. Its safe to say that acting isn’t a structured 9-5 kind of thing, you may be required to work up to 14 hours per day and be away from home for months.

4. Let go of your ego: Good actors are able to let themselves go 100% to the characters they are portraying in order to get a quality performance.

5. Be nice: Live of a philosophy of being kind and positive towards other people, no who they are and what they do. What goes around comes around.

Channel 7 "My Kitchen Rules 2" stand in shoot

Date: 12th July, 6-8.30pm.
Location: GLOBAL STUDIOS – AUSTRALIAN TECHNOLOGY PARK. Level 3, 8 Central Ave, Eveleigh.

I've been called into a stand in rehearsal shoot for Australian reality TV series "My Kitchen Rules 2" and to me, what the hell is a stand in? I later found out.

10 people were called in, 4 broadcast standard cameras, and approx. crew of 10 all figuring out the shots prior to the filming of the show. We had to stand in as the reality show contestants, critique the imaginary lobsters and succulent dishes, out in the cold...It was an alright experience and I got to meet another actor Jemwel Danao who were on the set of "Chains" feature film produced by Amin Palangi and Billy Marshall Stone King.

Shout out to Gina Stoj Management for the gig and also crazy Jack Ngu who always manage to drag me into things. But then again, its great have a team of go-getters, despite how oddball they can be.

ABC Children's Drama "My Place"

I was fortunate enough to have been casted on the set of ABC TV Children’s Drama “My Place” – a 13 part 30 min TV series due to be aired in 2010. Even though I haven’t had formal acting qualifications, I can sure tel you, based on my experience the lingo that you may need to know to make the production experience stress-free. Just as any industry has it’s own lingo, entertainment and acting do to.

ACTION! - The command from the director for the scene to begin. It also means that the camera is rolling.
CALL SHEET - A sheet containing the cast and crew call times for a specific day’s shooting. Scene numbers, the expected day’s total pages, locations, and production needs are also included.
CALL TIME - The actual time an actor is due on the set
CUE - Hand signal by the Stage Manager
CUT! - The verbal cue for the action of the scene to stop. At no time, may an actor call, “cut!”
MARK - The exact position(s) given to an actor on a set to insure that he/she is in the proper light and camera angle; generally marked on the ground with tape or chalk.
OVER-THE-SHOULDER - A shot over the shoulder of one actor, focusing entirely on the face and upper torso of the other actor in a scene; generally shot in pairs so both actors expressions can later be edited together.
REWRITE - Changes in the script, often using color-coded pages to indicate most current version.
Other ones that I was unfamiliar of include:
BLOCKING – which is the same as rehearsing without the camera rolling.
