THEATRE: "It's War!" Written/ Directed by Alex Lykos

When I first heard of this project, I was a little reluctant to get on board. There's plenty of wannabe theatre makers out there that keep on making content that just don't gel with audiences....entertainment them....or at least is thought provoking.

Also, there's just not much going around from ethnic artists that tell stories from the inside out, instead of the other way around. Then there's Alex Lykos -- a theatre maker underdoggie champion of the Greek community. His long time success is theatre-turned-movie "Alex & Eve". 

Lykos is quite a humble man. He loves his track-a-dacks but operates like clockwork and there's no airy fairiness when it comes it rehearsal scheduling. His directing style is quite similar to mine, unconventional and quite emotive and I'm in awe on how he works. 

Theatre is a relatively new craft to me. I've done a couple of play before such as facilitating "Aussie Cuoi" with Lex Marinos and a few snippety martial arts based performances. Then there's Playwriting Australia's Lotus Program that I got a chance to get the lowdown in play writing. 

But this play is exciting. I play Vietnamese import "Ngoc Bich" and this is a crazy colourful character that is a reflection of my mum and aunts in a blender.

There's a lot of "Domas" to be heard from my fiesty pocket rocket character, and her wannabe fight stances will sure be a crack up as she tries on several punch ups with her Greek counterpart; Soula. I'm not going to say much more, you have to come to the play.

A couple things I love about this play and commend it for it economics. Small cast, small staging but large stories and a whole lot of wackiness. 

Working with Lykos makes me inspired to get into theatre. Film is my thing, I know; but theatre is so exciting and lived experience. I think my acting has improved exponentially as well! I'm able to digest pages of scripting and present it's truth. No fear. Just character.

Vietnamese people must learn Vietnamese!
How many of us are faced with this? Being born in a host country and coming from Vietnamese descent isn’t always easy. We are children who are stuck in both worlds: one foot in the Westernised cultures of being individualistic and “go-getters” while our parents nag us to maintain our cultures by “Học tiếng Việt!”. My stance is it takes more than this. Much more to reconnect and language is only an avenue. Personally, my level of Vietnamese is atrocious. If there was any Vietnamese language competition I would be denied an application form. If there was “Who wants to be a Millionnaire – Viet Version” I should be on the black list, calling me will be like shooting yourself in the foot.

People I’d recommend include my colleague Joseph Hieu Dinh (Oz-Viet 2009 of the Year). His obsession with the Viet language during his childhood has definitely paid off in his young adult years. He can now “pick up” English speaking, Vietnamese Speaking and Arabic speaking girls.

Vietlish is going to LA!

After much thinking since December 2008, JH (Joseph Hieu Dinh) and MT (Maria Tran) are finally on the journey to the City of Angels "LA". Thanks to VAustralia (Virgin Airlines) and their neat sale airfares, we got to book a return trip for $1,315.
Here's our itinerary:

I and Dr Ashley Carruthers, Australian National University (ANU) is scheduled for the Southeast Asia: Text, Ritual and Performance (Seatrip) 2009 International Conference, University of California in October, 2-4, 2009 at Riverside.
Our paper is: "Vietlish: New Media of the Vietnamese Diaspora".

We are however doing a call out to anyone families living in LA (Fountain Valley, Santa Ana, Westminister & surrounding areas) to host 2-3 days of our stay while we will run our Vietlish segments at our host house.

"My Place" ABC Children's Drama Rehearsals

Location: Canal Rd, Leichardt.
Time: 9.30-3.30pm

Rehearsals began with a run through of "My Place" - Episode "1988 - Lily" - approx. 30 page script. It was a great chance to meet the main cast for this episode including lead actress Sheena Pham (from feature film as seen at the 2009 Sydney Film Festival "Missing Water" & theatre production "Motherfish"), Caroline Nguyen (as Phuong) & Cory Vi (as Chinh).


We broke off to do the scenes between Chinh (38), Thi Mai (35) and the kids. Director Shawn Seet [also a director for TV series "Dangerous" (2007)] was very patient and encouraging and gave good guidence through the interpretations of the scenes.
My role is Thi Mai (35) mother of Lily (10) [played by Sheena]. Thi Mai character is one that is highly strung, somewhat a perfectionist, has an extreme disgust of mice and is highly suspicious of her young know it all and often mischievous daughter.

I really really had fun seeing the dynamics between "Lily" and "Phuong" and just like what Cory said during the rehearsals, I also feel very grateful to be a part of this production that has been well researched into the Vietnamese experience in the earlier times of settlement in Australia.

"My Place" is a picture book written by Nadia Wheatley and illustrated by Donna Rawlins and it is about the history of one house and its surroundings, from 1788 to 1988. I got my copy of this picture book a day before my audition for the role and I must say, it is such a creative concept. The book is like an Australian time machine and the perspectives from the children are an awesome read.

Shooting for this production will start next week.

Tôi thật sự vui vẻ thực sự đã nhìn thấy các động thái giữa "Lily" và "Phương" và cũng giống như những gì Cory cho biết trong thời gian rút, tôi cũng cảm thấy rất biết ơn là một phần của sản phẩm này cũng đã được nghiên cứu vào kinh nghiệm của Việt Nam trong trước đó thời gian giải quyết tại Úc.

"My Place" là một cuốn sách ảnh bằng văn bản của Nadia Wheatley của tác giả Donna Rawlins và nó là về lịch sử của một ngôi nhà và vùng phụ cận, 1788-1988.
