CHAIN

WHAT IS IT?

CHAIN – ICE’s first foray into the world of dramatic feature-film storytelling – tells the story of those chains that link us – and sometimes bind us, for good or for ill.

This short feature project is the outcome of STUFF | THE DRAMA OF IT ALL, a filmmaking master class for emerging screenwriters and filmmakers from the wider Parramatta LGA to the world of dramatic, character-based screen storytelling.

TREATMENT

A chain is a series of connected links – a symbol of both strength and slavery. A chain may be used for lifting something up or for locking someone out. Chains appear in many guises. There are chains of events, and chains of ancestry and history. There are chains of thought, and chains of ignorance. A chain is a repeatable pattern. Something whose breaking might lead to either freedom or death.

Told through seven, inter-linked stories, the film dramatises a sampling of some of the cultural and generational challenges and conflicts that confront the multi-cultural community that is Sydney’s western suburbs. The focus for this exploration is the family, more specifically, the primary relationship of parents and children.

Working from the tribal origins of each of the writer/directors, the film reveals not only what is common to “the human family”, but also how cultural values and individual, generational differences within cultures, are capable of promoting strength and respect as well as prejudice and resentment. Through the actions and interactions of a diversity of tribally-specific characters, the film demonstrates that far from being an impediment to growth and empathy, diversity is an essential element in the cultivation and expression of tolerance and mutual respect.
